Surprise council to vote on letter to Noem at special meeting

City taking steps to get answers about ICE detention center plans

A week after meeting in executive session to discuss what to do about a planned ICE detention facility in Surprise, the city council is gathering again Wednesday to further decide on its response.

The council has called a special meeting for 4:30 p.m. to discuss approving a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The council will decide whether to ask Noem about the federal government’s plans for the detention facility.

U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Surprise), who serves half of the city, last week asked Noem to provide similar answers.
