Surprise council plans trip to D.C. to get ICE answers

Mayor approved to send letter to Noem about detention center plans

The Surprise City Council wants answers from the federal government about a planned Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in the city — and the council plans to travel to Washington, D.C., next month to try to get those answers.

The council voted in a special meeting Wednesday to allow Mayor Kevin Sartor to send a formal letter to the Department of Homeland Security requesting information and clarification on the project.

Also in the letter to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons, the city alerted them the council will make a trip to the nation’s capital from March 15 through March 19 to “make ourselves available at a time and place convenient with your schedule to discuss this matter.”
