Surprise considering permits for some free speech events

Staff looks into process for planned gatherings

History will show 2020 was the year of the coronavirus. But people taking to the streets to exercise their First Amendment rights would have been the top story in any normal year.

So far, 2021 has shown to be more of the same with the Pro-Trump supporters rioting at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

After a series of gatherings sprung up across Surprise last spring to support Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter, city officials have long hoped to get a handle on free speech and make sure it stays orderly and respectful within the city limits.
