Surprise commission denies proposal for more apartments

Project near Willow Canyon in limbo

The next steps for the Surprise Farms South PAD in front of Willow Canyon High School are unclear after the Surprise Planning & Zoning Commission voted down an amendment to the parcel by a 5-1 margin May 19.

Before the vote, eight Surprise residents spoke and seven identified themselves as residents of the Arizona Traditions active adult community north of Bell Road. Adding to the area’s already growing traffic woes were their main concerns.

“We already have a serious highway problem. The speeding that’s coming down from (Sun City) Festival on Bell Road and the amount of traffic is at extremely high density already pouring on to that part of the road. Plus we have high schooler who come out every afternoon. That road is a nightmare already. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like with the additional traffic coming from this high density development,” Connie Richey said May 19.
