The city of Surprise’s next art offering is a tour with Kevin Caron Studios at City Hall, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza.
It’s scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Feb. 1.
Artists from the studios will join this tour to discuss the creation of “topknot,” a sculpture located at City Hall.
Caron’s service in the U.S. Navy provided fundamental training in machine shops and aircraft maintenance yards.
After his honorable discharge in 1983, Caron ran a foreign car repair shop where he built his own vehicle between jobs.
This spectrum of constructive creativity has led him to familiarity with a variety of tools and resources. Working with an innate grasp of space and proportion, he is conscious of the visual impact of his pieces as well as their sounds and textures.
Caron became a full-time artist in 2006.
His work can be found across the U.S. and around the world in Australia, Germany, Luxembourg and Taiwan, as well at kevincaron.com.
Among his installations are Giant Street Urchin at Harbourside Place in Jupiter, Florida; and Wherever You Go, There You Are at Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
His sculpture Hands On for the city of Avondale won Westmarc’s 2009 Best of the West Award for Arts and Culture.
Caron’s sculptures have been exhibited at the Phoenix Art Museum, Shemer Art Center and Pima Community College East Campus.
In 2018, the Phoenix Mayor’s Art Awards named Caron the Visual Artist of the Year.
Art tours connect community members, artists and cultural organizations, highlighting the integral role art plays in the community fabric.
Participants will be guided to notice and access art and creativity all around us, and bring a sense of community, surprise and joy to the city.
Art tours are free, educational opportunities for the public to learn about art in Surprise by touring the city’s public art collection and visiting local studios and galleries.
Registration is required at surpriseaz.gov/ArtsSignUp.
