Surprise celebrates MLK with songs and volunteer service

Examples of how individuals and groups in the city of Surprise serve their community included such things as helping and spending time with the elderly, infirmed and aiding people and pets.

In addition to the dance, choral and spoken-word performances, there was a video montage of community members shown at the city of Surprise ninth annual MLK Day of Celebration and Service held Jan. 18 at Willow Canyon High School, 17901 W. Lundberg Street. The life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was highlighted throughout the program’s theme, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.”

Transformation Community Church Pastor Jason L. Flowers gave the invocation to start the morning program, followed by a welcome address from the new Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor. The Willow Canyon High School Choir, Voices of Gideon from Gideon Missionary Baptist Church, Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Choir and The Be Kind People Project crew performed.
