Surprise building inspectors given full slates

Planning & Zoning heard more cases in FY22

Fiscal year 2022 was busy in nearly every respect for the Surprise Community Development department and Planning and Zoning Commission.

Tiffany Copp, assistant director of community development, building safety, design services and code enforcement, presented one statistic during the Oct. 20 commission meeting that jumped out. The staff of 10 building inspectors and two supervisors averages 24 building safety inspections daily.

Surprise’s goal is to conduct an inspection no later than day after the request is called in. The total of inspections jumped from 51,542 in fiscal year 2021 to 60,013 in fiscal year 2022, but the daily case load dropped a bit from 25 to 24, as the city made more extensive use of four contractors and added staff.
