Surprise budget getting back to normal

City finances in good shape year after COVID

When COVID-19 shut down spring training on March 12, it brought with it an uncertain economic future for the city of Surprise.

As city staff worked on putting together the fiscal year 2021 budget last spring, the pandemic triggered furloughs of city staff, a hiring and salary freeze and the elimination of all non-essential spending.

But a year later, the city’s financial leaders are feeling a lot better about its future. In fact, it feels more like full steam ahead with budget planning for fiscal year 2022.
