West Valley city plans for massive park on flood control land

Council OKs lease agreement for McMicken Dam space

The city of Surprise is one step closer from taking over operations of the McMicken Dam to create a large nature park on land that’s bigger than the city of Litchfield Park.

The city council on April 15 voted to accept an intergovernmental agreement with the Flood Control District of Maricopa County for a 25-year lease, with three renewal periods of 25 years, to use 3,500 acres of land for a regional park.

“This is just such a great opportunity for us as a council to get this far in front of something like this,” said Councilmember Chris Judd, who has been instrumental in pushing for an agreement with the county. ”We’ve got a 100-year lease on this if we can keep up our end of the bargain.”
