The city of Surprise is accepting applications for the District 2 council seat formerly occupied by Jim Hayden, who died Dec. 20. All applicants must live within the District 2 boundaries for the term, which expires for the appointment on Dec. 31.
The remainder of the four-year term will be placed on the next scheduled City Council election in August.
All eligible individuals interested in filling the district vacancy must submit an application to the city clerk’s office prior to the close of the acceptance period at 5 p. m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, according to a release from the city.
The clerk will forward to the mayor and council and post on the city website a copy of all applications submitted. The council will interview each applicant at a public hearing 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23.
District 2 includes all of Sun City Grand and most of Arizona Traditions.
That will be followed by a seven-day period during which public comment may be submitted to the city clerk’s office, the release stated. The city clerk then will forward to the mayor and council and post on the city website a copy of all comments submitted.
A district candidate must be selected no later than the second regularly scheduled council meeting following a public hearing, Tuesday, Feb. 6.
Applications are available at the City Clerk’s Office, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza. The office is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. Applications also are available online at www.surpriseaz.gov, under City Clerk section.
Candidate election packets also are available for residents of District 2 interested in serving the remainder of the four-year term ending in December 2020.
Contact City Clerk Sherry Ann Aguilar at 623-222-1220 for details.
