With the recent death of retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and Phoenix mayor have come forward to sing her praises and offer remembrances.
The granddaughter of a rancher who settled in Arizona more than 100 years ago, O'Connor and her family helped tame the land to make for an easier life. She grew up in the Arizona desert and trailblazed a path for women from all walks of life to become one of the most respected women in the country.
Her name adorns buildings throughout the state, and she has left her mark as an Arizona icon.
