The Sunset Point rest area along Interstate 17 has reopened after receiving $7.5 million in upgrades, state transportation officials said.
Sunset Point, between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction, serves more than a million people a year as it is on a highly traveled route from the Valley to northern Arizona.
The project involved upgrading restrooms, water and septic systems and other amenities, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
In order to accommodate more travelers, the project included renovating and reopening the original restroom building that had been closed since the new restroom facility opened in 2010.
Those making the stop have views west toward the Bradshaw Mountains and also will see new signs, sidewalks, lighting, landscaping and renovated ramadas. Restrooms have new or upgraded lighting fixtures, doors, sinks, hand dryers and more, according to ADOT.
The project also renovated the rest area’s sundial memorial, which honors ADOT employees who have died while serving the state of Arizona.
