In a clash of the league’s two hottest teams, the Sun proved hotter than the Mercury Saturday. Connecticut topped Phoenix 76-67 in Phoenix’s Footprint Center to extend its win streak to 12 and snap Phoenix’s at 10.
It was just the second time in WNBA history two teams with win streaks of 10 or more faced each other, the other being Los Angeles versus Minnesota in 2016. Phoenix (19-11) won its first 10 games out of the Olympic break where its top three players — Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and Skylar Diggins-Smith — all won gold with Team USA. It's Phoenix's second-longest franchise win streak, the longest being a 16-gamer in 2014.
The Mercury feasted on the league’s weaker teams, never playing any of the league’s top four seeds during the 10-game win streak. Missing one of their stars with Taurasi out with an ankle injury Saturday, Phoenix could not stay hot against No. 1 seed Connecticut (24-6).
