OPINION — I have cancelled my membership with the Sun City West PORA and no longer recommend it to my new neighbors.
PORA stands for Property Owners and Residents Association. When I first moved to SCW several years ago I became a PORA member as they said they represented SCW with issues such as water, power, roads, etc., acting on residents’ behalf for issues that affected residents and our properties.
Now I am confused with how involved PORA is with the BNSF project in Wittmann. Every week, PORA sends out “updates” on how they are fighting BNSF, the latest an open letter to the Chamber of Commerce.
What does that have to do with Sun City West property owners? Wittmann is just over 13 miles from SCW. If you drew a circle from RH Johnson Rec Center 13 miles around it would touch I-10/Litchfield Park to the south, 1-17/Phoenix to the east and the TSMC complex to the north and everything in between.
PORA has seemed to make the BNSF project their sole goal of late and it is not in our “village.” Will PORA become activists for every other project that falls into the 26-mile circle? What about the chip foundry going into Vistancia, the bridges on Loop 303, road extensions of El Mirage Road, the new gas-fired power plant to support the data center near Luke AFB?
The state sold BNSF the land, many of the houses that are complaining were built after BNSF bought the original parcels, it is next to a huge Toyota test track. But I paid dues to PORA to represent me, not the citizens of Wittmann.
If PORA wants to be an activist/lobbying organization for the Valley so be it, but quit complaining when no one wants to be a member and quit asking RCSCW to fund your activities.
