Walt Disney World in Florida celebrates 50 years and a Sun City West resident was there before the gates ever opened. Before it was truly the magical kingdom. Something he helped come to fruition.
Jamie Gunyuz was in his early 20s when he was hired as a project engineer for Disney in 1968. In the beginning, work began on land reclamation projects including draining swamplands and building levees. Then he worked on the theme park construction and underground utilities. He spent the last two years working as the resident engineer on the construction of the wastewater treatment and solid waste incinerator plants, which Gunyuz said were the first of this kind at that time.
Another task Gunyuz was given included picking up Roy O. Disney, Disney President Don Tatum, Disney legal lead Bob Foster and others. He drove the group around the rugged Disney World property while under construction to check the progress.
