Sun City Safeway may be sold

Contingent on merger approval

The Sun City Safeway, 10926 W. Bell Road, and the Sun City West Safeway, 13503 W. Camino Del Sol, are both listed among the more than 100 stores Albertsons, which owns the chain, may be selling in order to complete a merger with Kroger.

Kroger is seeking to buy Albertsons and Safeway supermarkets in a proposed $24.6 billion purchase. Kroger has vowed to sell nearly 600 stores it acquires nationally, including 101 in Arizona, to allay monopoly concerns, assuming the merger is completed. Kroger is seeking to buy Albertsons Cos., which owns both Albertsons and Safeway markets.

Kroger is the parent company of Arizona grocery chain Fry’s Food and Smith’s Food and Drugs while Albertsons owns Safeway, which has 105 locations in the state.
