Sun City resident Ralph Ward, a member of Team USA, competed in the World Triathlon World Championship Finals in Pontevedra, Spain.

More than 50 countries with almost 4,000 triathletes were in Pontevedra competing for podium spots in the different World Championship races. Team USA, some 400 members strong, as a team took 58 individual medals in the four-day event, the most of any country competing.

Ward competed in the super sprint triathlon time trial, which included a 300m swim, 6.45k bike, and 1.6k run. He finished in second place in the male 80-84 age group to clinch the silver medal.

He also competed in the standard aquabike event, which included a 1500m swim and 40k bike where he finished first in the male 80-84 age group, taking the gold medal and becoming the 2023 age group world champion in that event.

As a result of Ward’s strong performance, he has qualified to represent Team USA again in next October’s World Triathlon Championship to be held in Malaga, Spain.
