Sun City hosts ukelele duo familiar to ‘Seinfeld’ fans

The Ukulele Club of Sun City invites all to an evening of musical fun and entertainment as they host two of the country’s top "ukulele circuit" performers for a special local appearance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at the Sundial Auditorium, 14801 N. 103rd Ave.

Daniel Ward, an accomplished musician, composer and educator, graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in classical guitar performance, and a minor in composition. His musical expertise includes Flamenco, jazz, pop and most styles of world music. He is a seasoned educator, with 25 years of experience teaching music to all ages. He is a consultants for music method books, and writes as a columnist for Ukulele online magazines.

For this exclusive West Valley performance, Mr. Ward will be joined by Heidi Swedberg, a well-known film and television actress (best known as George Costanza’s fiancée on "Seinfeld") who has been playing the ukulele since receiving one from the Easter Bunny when she was 5 years old. While music was always present in her life, she realized that singing and playing ukulele with her own children brought her so much joy that she drifted away from auditions and eventually towards teaching, recording and performing.

Together the duo has performed as artists in residence at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix and at Children’s Music Festivals around the country, including concerts in Los Angeles, New York City, Kansas City, Oklahoma City and the Austin City Limits Festival. They were also featured performers at Music China in Shanghai in 2012.

Mr. Ward has been a featured performer and workshop instructor at festivals across the country, including: Reno Ukulele festival, West Coast Ukulele retreat, Wine Country Ukulele Festival, San Diego Ukulele Festival, Port Townsend Ukulele festival, Albuquerque Ukulele festival and many more.

Tickets for this performance are $10 (cash or check only) and are available as follows:

• Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. in the second floor Music Room at the Fairway Center (10600 W. Peoria Ave.)

• Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the Fairway Center Spring Fling

On a related note, the public is also invited to Fairway at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 23 to join the Ukulele Club (along with Mr. Ward and Ms. Swedberg) when they donate several more ukuleles to Maricopa County Libraries. There will be refreshments and a short program this afternoon by these performers.
