Summer monsoons can be deadly for elderly Arizonans; preparation is critical

OPINION — As Arizona monsoons roll in, it’s important to check in on the older adults in your life — whether it’s a neighbor, friend or family member. Before extreme August temperatures arrive in full force, and as monsoon season picks up, a quick visit can help ensure their safety and well-being.

Older adults are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses due to age-related changes in their ability to regulate body temperature and manage chronic health conditions. Unfortunately, many Arizonans who live alone or on fixed incomes may be especially vulnerable — not only to the physical dangers of heat but also to isolation that prevents them from reaching out for help.

These situations become even more dangerous if the power goes out during a monsoon storm, leaving them without air conditioning, fans or refrigerated food, prescriptions and water.
