Subcommittee OKs Phoenix’s first bus rapid transit route

City Council will vote for final approval

Phoenix’s Transportation Subcommittee this month recommended approval of the city’s first “bus rapid transit” route, running north and south along 35th Avenue. Final approval of the route is now up to a City Council vote, which has yet to be scheduled.

Two routes running east and west are also being considered but have been shelved while the city considers potential light rail routes into west Phoenix.

“There is ongoing analysis for future high-capacity transit in west Phoenix and that may affect the east-west BRT (bus rapid transit) corridors. So, it is recommended that a final decision on the east-west BRT corridors be deferred until there’s further resolution on the high-capacity corridors in west Phoenix,” said Phoenix Bus Rapid Transit Administrator Sara Kotecki during a Wednesday, Sept. 15 Transportation, Infrastructure and Planning Subcommittee meeting.
