Study will reveal if Lake Pleasant bird population is declining

Local volunteers take part in annual Christmas Bird Count

Peoria is doing its part to join the effort across North America to count and document the environmental bird population -- and to hopefully understand better why numbers are dropping.

On Dec. 16, volunteers joined forces with park rangers from Peoria, Maricopa County and Arizona Game & Fish Department to survey the local bird population at Lake Pleasant.

The National Audubon Society has conducted bird counts since 1900, and volunteers from throughout the Western Hemisphere go afield during one calendar day between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5 to record every bird species and individual bird encountered within a designated 15-mile diameter circle in what’s dubbed the “Christmas Bird Count” (CBC), according to Arizona Field Orinthologists.
