Study: Surprise ranked 221st for cultural diversity

Rankings put city in top half of U.S.

A new study said Surprise has a long way to go to becoming one of the most culturally diverse cities in the U.S. — but it’s far from the worst.

Financial site WalletHub ranked the top 500 cities for its diversity based on ethnicity and race, language and birthplace and found Surprise 221st overall.

But one of the highlights in the study for Surprise was it’s ranked 15th nationally in birthplace diversity, a sign of how new of a city Surprise is.

The study focused on the top 10 biggest cities in every state and ranked them as a whole, as well as breaking them up into large cities (more than 300,000 people), midsize cities (100,000 to 300,000 people) and small cities (less than 100,000 people).

Surprise was ranked 85th overall among midsize cities.

In the overall rankings, Surprise came in eighth among the 10 Arizona cities sampled. The study said Phoenix, Glendale, Tucson, Tempe, Chandler, Mesa and Peoria are all more diverse than Surprise.

Phoenix turned in the highest ranking among Arizona’s cities at 57th.

In overall rankings, Jersey City, New Jersey; Gaithersburg, Maryland; Germantown, Maryland; Spring Valley, Nevada and Silver Spring, Maryland were the top five most diverse cities, according to the study.
