Street dedication will honor Black Phoenix activist Vernell Myers Coleman

Thirty-four years after her death, Phoenix activist Vernell Myers Coleman is being honored with a street name dedication.

“She made many, many contributions to the city and her community,” said Coleman’s daughter, Charlesetta Coleman-Miller, ahead of city council’s unanimous vote last week.

Coleman advocated for tenants in the Matthew Henson Housing Project where she lived and fought to ensure poor Phoenix residents were cared for.
