Storms force Arizona evacuations, close state highways, flood Valley streets

Tempe temporarily closes Town Lake

Flash flooding prompted mandatory evacuation orders in parts of Arizona Sunday as state transportation officials closed multiple highways and Salt River Project increased dam releases that will affect some Valley roads beginning today.

Officials in Sedona ordered residents in areas near Oak Creek to leave immediately as flood waters were rising rapidly and multiple people were already trapped in their homes.

The latest round of soaking rains started Saturday evening and were expected to bring flash flooding to already saturated areas through Monday. The National Weather Service estimates as much as 4 inches of rain could fall across the region, fueled by a series of Pacific storm systems.
