Fifteen-year-old Layla Phillips stood over her final putt on the 18th hole at the Underrated Golf Tour stop in Scottsdale as about 100 fellow competitors watched from around the green.
As soon as the ball dropped into the hole to secure her victory, the other competitors sprinted after her, chasing her with water bottles before drenching her in celebration; a tradition among competitors on Stephen Curry’s Underrated Golf Tour.
The annual tour gives top minority golfers ages 12 to 18 the opportunity to compete on some of the nation’s premier golf courses while preparing them for college golf and future careers.
