Steinway artist collaborates at Surprise Vista Center

Arizona Philharmonic presents internationally-renowned Steinway artist James D’León in a piano quintet, collaborating for the first time with four of AZ Phil’s principal string players at 7 p.m. Friday, April 1 at The Vista Center for the Arts.

This is the last Arizona Philharmonic concert of the 2021-22 season.

“D’León curates and directs some of his favorite works for piano and strings. You will enjoy Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1, a couple of Piazzolla tangos that are rarely heard in concert for piano trio, and the Brahms Piano Quintet in f minor.

Aimed for classical music lovers, including adults and families with older children, this program ranges from classical and romantic to 20th century tangos. James also speaks to the audience before each work to highlight certain aspects behind their creation,” said Henry Flurry, AZ Phil Executive Director.

Reviews about D’León’s performances include:

“James D’León presents stunningly beautiful interpretations of these works by Beethoven, Liszt, and Tsontakis. With a touch that is both intensely delicate and fueled by conviction and command, D’León conveys these powerful works with the ease of inhaling and exhaling. A winner of many national and international competitions, he has performed across the United States, Canada and Europe as a solo recitalist and with major symphonies. It comes as no surprise that this superb musician has captivated audiences throughout the globe.” — Limerick Post, Ireland

Accompanying D’León is AZ Phil’s principal String Quartet, whose members also perform with other orchestras around the state. Included are violinist Grace Nakano (Assistant Concertmaster of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra), violinist Laura Cásarez (Tucson Symphony Orchestra), violist Kimberly Sullivan (Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra), and Ruthie Wilde (principal cellist of the West Valley Symphony, and founding member of the Evox Ensemble).

Kimberly Sullivan is a founding orchestra member (principal violist) of Arizona Philharmonic. This concert marks Laura Cásarez’s debut performance with Arizona Philharmonic.

Sponsorship, donations, advertising and volunteer and board member opportunities for the upcoming season can be found at AZPhil.org. There are multiple levels of advertising and sponsorship offering many benefits, and volunteer openings.

Arizona Philharmonic is celebrating its fourth season as Prescott’s regional professional orchestra, presenting large and small concerts. Based in Prescott and performing also in Surprise, AZ Phil draws musicians from across Arizona.
