Arizona’s statewide ban on the use of handheld cellphones while driving officially goes into effect on Friday, Jan. 1.
Glendale motorists should be well ahead of the curve, since the city council unanimously instituted its own ban in 2019. In effect since Feb. 7 that year, Glendale already prohibits talking on a cellphone, sending a text message or otherwise using a handheld communications device while driving in the city, unless the device is in hands-free mode.
Until Arizona passed the statewide ban a couple months later, it had been one of only three states – along with Montana and South Carolina – that did not have a statewide ban on texting while driving.
