State senators approve measure to create banned book list

PHOENIX — State senators gave preliminary approval Thursday to a measure directing the Arizona Department of Education to come up with a list of books that are banned in public schools.

And it wouldn’t just include lewd or sexual materials.

Senate Bill 1700 would require the agency, which is currently headed by Republican Tom Horne, to also include on that list materials that “promote gender fluidity or gender pronouns.” And the measure includes similar language on what local school boards and libraries must remove from their own shelves.
