State awards Mesa nearly $400,000 for DUI enforcement, safety programs

The Mesa Police Department has secured nearly $400,000 in state grants to boost DUI enforcement efforts and pay for a variety of other programs to improve safety on city streets.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety recently announced the awarding of money for the 2023 fiscal year, stating that the agency’s goal is “advancement of public safety programs” throughout Arizona.

To accomplish those goals, according to a release, the GOHS awards grant funding to police departments, fire departments and nonprofit organizations.

The Mesa Police Department has secured nearly $400,000 in state grants to boost DUI enforcement efforts and pay for a variety of other programs to improve safety on city streets.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety recently announced the awarding of money for the 2023 fiscal year, stating that the agency’s goal is “advancement of public safety programs” throughout Arizona.

To accomplish those goals, according to a release, the GOHS awards grant funding to police departments, fire departments and nonprofit organizations.

Here are Mesa’s grants and how the money will be spent:

DUI Enforcement Overtime, Materials and Supplies: $83,400

  • Holiday DUI task force events.
  • DUI enforcement related to patrol district projects.
  • Support training and education to combat impaired driving.
  • Portable breath-test machines.

 DUI Enforcement Capital Outlay Equipment: $175,919

  •  Forensic testing equipment.

 Selective Traffic Enforcement Overtime, Materials and Supplies: $60,000

  •  Back-to-school enforcement.
  • Speed enforcement.

 Occupant Protection Overtime, Materials and Supplies: $20,220

  •  Child safety seat education and enforcement.
  • Child safety seats/boosters.

Pedestrian and Bicyclist Focus Education and Enforcement Efforts: $35,650

  • Education and enforcement of pedestrian, bicyclist and driver violations affecting the safety of
  • pedestrians/bicyclists.

 Accident Investigation Training: $16,580

  • Collision reconstruction training courses.
