Stanton wants more oversight on Surprise ICE facility

Arizona congressman asks for consultation with cities first

Surprise might have gotten its name from a founder who said the city would not amount to much.

But surprise was exactly the reaction for city officials and the city council in January after it was revealed the Department of Homeland Security bought a vacant warehouse at Sweetwater Avenue and Dysart Road to turn into an ICE detention center.

U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., is hoping another city will not get caught off guard like that in the future.
