The first group of Salt River Project line crews left Tempe on Saturday to join workers from 20 other utility companies in providing electricity to Arizona families on the Navajo Nation.

It is the fourth time the Light Up Navajo initiative has taken place, and SRP has dedicated two crews this year to assist for three weeks, according to a release.

A total of 14 SRP employees will participate through April 22.

Families who live without basic necessities such as a refrigerator and stove should start seeing power as early as Monday as crews begin setting miles of wooden distribution poles and stringing lines through the nation, SRP officials said, noting that its workers will be in the Lechee area.

Since the project began in 2019, 780 homes on the Navajo Nation have electricity because of the effort with SRP employees directly responsible for aiding 98 families, the release stated.

The mutual-aid initiative is organized by the American Public Power Association and the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority, which is the public power utility serving the Navajo Nation.
