Salt River Project is offering two free trees to eligible customers to help create shade and reduce energy use for their property.

Eligible customers, according to a press release, must:

  • Attend a virtual workshop;

    * Be a current SRP electric customer;
    * Have a legal right to planting trees on property;
    * Call 811 prior to planting to locate utility lines;
  • Eligible customers can choose two 2- to 6-foot saplings of Palo Verde, Native Mesquite, Thornless Mesquite, Willow Acacia, Desert Willow or Lilac Chaste.
  • Workshops are held noon Thursday, July 24, and 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23.
  • Strategically planted shade trees can reduce energy use by up to 25% by lowering indoor temperatures, SRP officials said. They also help combat the urban heat island effect and support local biodiversity.
  • The Shade Tree Program is a community partnership with Trees Matter, a Phoenix-based nonprofit dedicated to environmental education and urban forestry. Each year, the program provides more than 5,000 desert-adapted shade trees, and to date, it has distributed over 65,000 trees to more than 30,000 SRP customers.
