Phoenix police detectives are investigating a Sunday collision that resulted in two deaths, and they suspect speeding was a factor in the crash.

Phyliss Wauneka, 44, died at the scene of the collision near 57th Avenue and Indian School Road, and  Antonio Wauneka, 37, a passenger in the vehicle driven by Wauneka, was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.

The crash occurred just before 5:56 a.m. Aug. 3, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle involved was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons.

Preliminary information suggests Wauneka was attempting to cross Indian School Road northbound on 57th Avenue from a stop sign when the vehicle she was driving was struck by another vehicle, according to a Phoenix Police Department release, which added speed is suspected to be a factor in the collision.

The driver of the other vehicle stayed at the scene, “and detectives evaluated the man and did not identify signs of impairment,” the release stated.

Charging decisions will not be determined until the conclusion of the investigation, police said.
