Speed possible factor in deadly Phoenix collision

Pheonix police detectives are examining whether speed was the cause of a Tuesday night collision that left a woman dead and hospitalized three others.

The crash occurred about 6:15 p.m. Oct. 3 near 69th Avenue and Thomas Road, police said.

Preliminary information suggests Bibiana Mendoza, 20, was was in a vehicle traveling eastbound on Thomas Road nearing 69th Avenue when it collided with another making an eastbound turn onto Thomas Road from 69th Avenue, according to detectives.

Speed possible factor in deadly Phoenix collision

Pheonix police detectives are examining whether speed was the cause of a Tuesday night collision that left a woman dead and hospitalized three others.

The crash occurred about 6:15 p.m. Oct. 3 near 69th Avenue and Thomas Road, police said.

Preliminary information suggests Bibiana Mendoza, 20, was was in a vehicle traveling eastbound on Thomas Road nearing 69th Avenue when it collided with another making an eastbound turn onto Thomas Road from 69th Avenue, according to detectives.

Another vehicle, also traveling eastbound, collided with the vehicle Mendoza was in causing it to roll over, police said.

Mendoza, a passenger in one of the vehicles, died at the scene. The men driving the three cars involved were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor; however, speed is likely to be a factor in the collision, according to a release from the Phoenix Police Department.

Authorities said the accident reconstruction portion of the investigation will aid in determining the cause.
