A time capsule ceremony took place during a June 9 Dysart Unified School District Governing Board meeting to wrap up the centennial celebrations and commemorate 100 years of excellence in education.
The district was honored to have Margaret Truman Baker speak and share her history.
“In the fall election of 1970, now there were three seats available on the board for election (to add to the two continuing members), and there were 11 candidates,” Baker said. “My husband, Larry Baker, and I and our children had just moved into the district from Yuma, Arizona — into the ranch area. I barely met the residency requirement to be a school board candidate, and I was amazed that I received the highest number of votes. I was the first woman elected, and at 30 years old would have been the youngest candidate ever elected — except for Larry Aguirre from El Mirage, who was elected at the same time.”
