Southside Phoenix shooting leaves one dead, 2 children, woman injured

A man died and a woman and two children were hospitalized Saturday after a shooting near 19th Avenue and Baseline Road, Phoenix police said.

None of the victims were identified as of Saturday night.

The shooting occurred about 2:45 p.m. Nov. 22 when, investigators said, the suspect, who has not been identified, and victims were about to pull out of a parking lot just north of 7550 S. 19th Ave.

A fight began after which those involved went back to their vehicles – the suspect into a car and the victims into an SUV. The suspect pulled out a gun and shot several rounds at the SUV, striking four people, police said.

Phoenix Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced the  man driving the SUV dead. The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Three young children were in the back seat of the SUV, two of them had gunshot wounds.

One of the children was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and the other received non-life threatening injuries. The third child was not struck by gunfire but was taken to the hospital with the other victims.

“Witnesses did report seeing the adult female victim take out her own gun and shoot back at the suspect,” who was later taken to the hospital for unrelated health issues and was admitted for overnight care.
