South Phoenix American Legion Post mural honors Hispanic heroes

SRP-funded project in one of city’s oldest neighborhoods

On the south-facing wall of Arizona’s first Hispanic American Legion Post in one of Phoenix’s oldest neighborhoods, there is a mural that tells the story of the Grant Park neighborhood.

The 18-by-45-foot artwork on a corner of Second Avenue and Sherman Street depicts a community rich in Latino culture and history, according to a release from Salt River Project, which funded the project.

“We are the best-kept secret in the community,” said Dr. Louis Olivas, American Legion Post’s 41’s senior vice commander.
