South Mountain Speedway could be demolished, families fight for a place for kids to race

A racetrack where children race small cars in south Phoenix is in jeopardy of being demolished. Some families with young racers are looking for a way to keep it open.

The South Mountain Speedway inside Phoenix’s South Mountain Park and Preserve has fallen into disrepair and needs nearly $1 million in upgrades to reopen. That reinvestment has Phoenix Parks officials questioning whether it is appropriate to be inside the preserve in the first place.

The city-owned track was built in 1962, but the city has acknowledged it’s an inappropriate use for preserve land dating back to at least 1989 — it was noted in the preserve’s master plan at the time.
