The Arizona Department of Transportation has now opened the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway to all traffic.
ADOT confirmed the opening on its South Mountain Freeway Facebook page. Officials are still in the process of removing barricades from certain sections, according to a spokesman.
The 22-mile freeway connects the southeast Valley with the West Valley around the south end of South Mountain, bypassing downtown Phoenix along Interstate 10.
Arizona officials had convened Wednesday to celebrate the impending opening.
The freeway is a $1.7 billion project that began construction in 2016 and finished three years early due to a public-private partnership.
The freeway is also known as Congressman Ed Pastor Freeway.
