Socio-emotional learning — does it stop when social media starts?

Two Valley women have worked on solutions for teens amid a technology- and image-centered adolescence.

With so much recent news about teen violence in the East Valley — much of it presented, passed along and, in some cases, exacerbated or even encouraged using social media — these women shared their perspectives with how social media and negative behaviors that accompany, or are encouraged by it, affect and preclude emotional development and socio-emotional learning.

The so-called “Gilbert Goons” cases have brought to the public videos that show teens, mostly boys in large groups, assaulting one or two other teens, sometimes with weapons.
