Smoke Tree Resort redevelopment studied by planning commission

Citizen review to be scheduled in coming weeks

Paradise Valley Planning Commission met last week for a second study session on Smoke Tree Resort’s application for a major special use permit to demolish and redevelop the existing resort that has been shuttered for several years since falling into bankruptcy.

The commission’s discussion focused on where the proposal does not meet the special use permit guidelines along with how the resort will fit into the partially undeveloped area around it. Key issues to consider, according to Commissioner Charles Covington, are height limitations and density.

“The reduced lot size of the resort, its location near the city of Scottsdale/Scottsdale Road with public transit and denser development and adjoining non-residential areas may warrant some or all of the proposed differences from the SUP guidelines,” said Paul Michaud, acting community development director.
