SLOW YOUR ROLL: Phoenix considers crack down on street racing

Phoenix is considering cracking down further on street racers, allowing cars used for street racing to be impounded and those watching street races to be cited. If adopted, this would be in addition to existing laws against speeding and reckless driving and state laws against street racing.

The city’s Public Safety and Justice Subcommittee directed staff to draft a street racing ordinance that City Council could potentially approve. The change would mean any vehicle involved in a street race would be impounded for 30 days, and spectators of street racing activities could be cited by police, especially when the event involves the unlawful “takeover” or blocking off of a street or intersection.

“I know that in Laveen and in Maryvale, every weekend, somebody’s crashing into somebody’s fence, somebody’s house. So, I think this is something that’s really needed,” said Councilman Michael Nowakowski, who later added he’s heard of a lot of street racing in the Estrella neighborhood.
