Roadway problems caused by the drivers
Posted
By Tom Slade - Sun City West
There is nothing wrong with the roads or road safety in Sun City West.
There may be problems with some drivers, however.
Since moving to Sun City West full time I have witnessed incidents of poor driving habits by residents that have little to do with roads. Specifically, a few years ago a very elderly man stepped on the gas instead of the brake and landed he and his wife in a detention pond in Sun City West. This might have been funny if the wife of the man had not drowned.
I have witnessed numerous instances of elderly drivers cutting off others by illegal lane changes, which can cause accidents. Finally, not too long ago I was driving past the Kuntz Recreation Center and witnessed an elderly male jump the curb in the parking lot and land his car in the roadside landscaping. Had he been going faster, he would have landed his car right into the side of mine.
The point of this is that good driving habits, such as paying attention to the traffic in the immediate area, obeying the rules of the road and finally when the time comes, admitting that the various infirmities of age prevent a person from being able to be a safe driver will contribute to road safety at least as much as handing out speeding tickets.
