The Mercury fell short of a championship as the Chicago Sky defeated Phoenix 80-74 Sunday in Chicago to clinch the WNBA Finals and lift the trophy for the first time in the team’s 16-year history.
Phoenix had control most of the game and led 72-65 with four minutes and 42 seconds left but did not make a field goal the rest of the way, scoring only two points on throws. They Sky finished with a 15-2 run to win the game and the championship.
“We had some really good looks. Diana had really good looks. We just missed them, which is unfortunate,” Mercury coach Sandy Brondello said. “It would have been nice to be going back to a Game 5 now, but it’s not going to happen this year.”
