The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department will soon have the ability to have eyes on parks and preserves from above as it will launch its drone program by the end of the year.
It becomes the third city department to launch a program for drones, or unmanned aircraft systems. Phoenix Fire and Police each began a program last year.
Deputy Parks Director Jared Rogers told the Sonoran Preserves and Mountain Park/Preserves Committee last week that will start with at least one drone when it launches later this year. Over time, staff will add a few different types of drones for different settings. Parks staff is currently identifying park rangers who could become pilots and will train them in the coming months.
