Sky Harbor workers say companies not following through on city’s new heat safety regulations

Last year, Phoenix put in heat safety regulations for contracted workers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. However, many workers spoke before city council this month saying their companies are not following those changes.

“We saw worker after worker coming up and saying some conditions have changed, but not everything has changed,” Councilmember Betty Guardado said during the July 2 council meeting.

Much of the testimony surrounded the company Sky Chefs, which prepares and delivers food to planes on the tarmac. Drivers testified that few of the trucks have working air conditioning. The company uses swamp coolers in the truck as a supplement, they said, but their batteries die after about two hours. One Sky Chef driver said the company does not allowed them to have bottled water in the trucks.
