Skateboarding academy imparts life lessons to foster children teaching ‘Skate-or-Die’ mentality

Tempe nonprofit teaches resilience atop a skateboard deck

The +swappow PLUS Foundation is launching a new virtual skateboarding academy to continue serving the foster care community in Arizona.

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, +swappow PLUS, a Tempe-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supplies skateboarding programming to foster children throughout the state, was forced to cancel all of its face-to-face teaching sessions this year, according to Joe Dunnigan, founder and CEO.

“Not to be deterred, however, we immediately shifted focus to creating a program that now serves children in foster care virtually, and perhaps in more meaningful ways than our in-person events ever did,” Mr. Dunnigan said.
