Single-vehicle Van Buren Street crash kills man on New Year’s Day

Detectives are investigating a fatal crash that closed all traffic at 16th and Van Buren streets on New Year’s Day.
At about 1:15 p.m. Jan. 1, officers responded to the single-vehicle collision at 1600 West Van Buren Street. The driver, Jesus Tapia-Serrano, 38, was taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.
Detectives learned Tapia-Serrano was driving west on Van Buren Street when he lost control of the car. He was seen driving into oncoming traffic and crashing into a pole on the south side of Van Buren Street, according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
