Scottsdale and Paradise Valley are moving forward with adding teeth to municipal ordinances associated to short-term rental properties in an effort to maintain health, safety and respectful neighborliness in residential communities.
The stricter laws haven’t been met with all open arms, as some industry proponents, including Barry Goldwater Jr., are voicing opposition to rules that may be a burden, such as a 60-minute response time when police ask for a local contact. That burden, one city council member says, puts some responsibility back on the property owners to be good partners.
“I understand that to show up in 60 minutes may be a burden, but as Brent [Stockwell] explained, if the police show up and the tenants aren’t going to respond, then I think the owner needs to take some responsibility,” said Scottsdale City Councilwoman Linda Milhaven.
