A 23-year-old man was shot Saturday morning at the drive-through area of the McDonald’s at Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue in Mesa, police said.

Mesa officers were sent to the fast-food restaurant about 3 a.m. Jan. 13 and found a man on the ground. He had been shot and was taken to a hospital where he died, according to a release.

He was identified Sunday as Daniel Betker, 23.

“Preliminary information is that two groups of people were involved in a verbal altercation while in the drive-through that escalated to the shooting,” police stated in the release.

Detectives are following up on leads for a possible suspect, police said.
